TMEA REGION XIX SPRING ORCHESTRA DIVISION MEETING MINUTES
MAY, 2005
(Note: this meeting did not go according to agenda, due to needs of Ben Gollehan, and the discussion that entailed. Minutes were not formally taken, so this is a sketch of the meeting according to the agenda)
I. Meeting called to order by Kevin Black, Orchestra Division Chairman.
II. Discussion of UIL dates, to allow for three days per contest. There was discussion on having a non-varsity contest and varsity contest, a middle school contest and high school contest, and it was decided that a poll would be taken to determine the format of our contests.
III. Minutes from fall meeting presented and approved.
IV. Region Concert and Clinic: Discussion by Bryan Buffaloe and Tanner Ledford to move the January Region activity to an earlier date in November. There was discussion about less activity in November, and it was determined that we would need band division support on this. The motion was not completed until a suitable date could be determined that did not conflict with band activities. There was band director support, and a separate HS wind audition was not dismissed by the band division. Unofficial January dates were still set until further notice
V. New Business/Announcements:
a.
TODA Convention Dates announced: July 25 –
b. Dates/locations for 2005 – 2006 school year set
c. Discussion on 3 and 5 member panels for chair auditions. The 5 member judging panel is not required for chair auditions, so the region will allow 3 member panels for the HS chair auditions. MS chair panels will remain at 5
d. UIL Dates are set, with an unknown format, but to take place during March 29-31 at Dobie HS and April 5-7 at South Houston HS
e. Nominations are taken for the Middle School region coordinator, to fill the remaining year left due to Shirley Astwood’s vacancy. Shirley was thanked (although absent) for volunteering to fill the position caused by Michael Astwood’s leave from Region 19. Sandra Shaffer was nominated, but she declined, and Kevin Black nominated Ken Buck. Although absent, he expressed interest in the position, and was accepted to the position by acclamation.
f. Dismissal of MS Directors
g. HS
Meeting notes:
h. Region 19 All-State taping rules were modified. The rule is that students must make the region orchestra to be allowed to record for All-State. With 1 spot open to piano, it was decided that if the pianist accepted to region was not going to record for all-state, that the first alternate would be allowed to record. If the first alternate did not choose to record, the 2nd alternate, on down, would be allowed to record. With harps, the region accepts two harpists to the region orchestra, but All-State allows for 4 harpists from each region to record. It was decided that we would take up to 4 harpists for All-State taping, even if two did not make the region orchestra. No changes in the other sections would change.
i. 9-10 etude material was discussed, but with the absence of music, the music would be discussed through email.
